monday, april 23

Ancient Jerusalem


SITES YOU WILL VISIT
  • Temple Mount - where the second Jewish Temple once stood, now home of the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque
  • Western "Wailing" Wall - a section of the Temple Mount foundation dating back to the 2nd Temple Period and the most sacred Jewish site in Jerusalem
  • Southern Temple Steps - part of extensive excavations that have unearthed steps from the time of Jesus leading up to the Temple Mount 
  • Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre- the "way of the cross" leading to the traditional site of Jesus' crucifixion
  • City of David Excavations - the original site of King David's capital of Israel, including the Pool of Siloam and Hezekiah's Tunnel

A trek through the historic and amazing tunnel dug by Hezekiah to survive the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem.

  • Wilderness of Zin - the deserts where the Israelites spent the majority of their wilderness years before entering the Promised Land
  • Arad - the ruins of a temple patterned after God's Temple in Jerusalem

The Birth of Jesus


SITES YOU WILL VISIT
  • Taybeh - called Ephraim in the Bible, where Jesus went after he raised Lazarus to life as the Jewish authorities planned to put Jesus to death
  • Herodium - the fortress built by Herod the Great which later became his burial place
  • Vineyard
  • Bethlehem & Church of Nativity - the city of Jesus' birth
  • Shepherds' Field - a serene hillside overlooking Bethlehem where shepherds tend their flock

Palm Sunday and the Crucifixion


SITES YOU WILL VISIT
  • Tomb of Lazarus - the traditional location where Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus
  • Bethany & Bethpage - the cities on the Mount of Olives where Jesus stayed before his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday
  • Mount of Olives - a hill overlooking Jerusalem from the east where Jesus ascended to heaven
  • Garden of Gethsemane - the traditional location where Jesus prayed and was betrayed
  • Antonia Fortress - the traditional location where Jesus was beaten and mocked with a crown of thorns 
  • Israel Museum/Shrine of the Book - the home of Israel's greatest archaeological treasures and the Dead Sea Scrolls
  • Gordon's Calvary & the Garden Tomb - an ancient tomb similar to the one in which Christ was buried
  • Rabbinical Tunnel - an underground excavation project which has exposed the full length of the Western Wall

  • Samaria - the ancient capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel
  • Shechem/Nablus - the city between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim visited by Abraham, Jacob, and Jesus
  • Jericho - the first Canaanite city the Israelites conquered in the Promised Land

Joshua, Judges and Kings


SITES YOU WILL VISIT
  • Qasr el Yahud Baptismal Site - the traditional site where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist
  • Saint George's Monastery - a sixth-century cliff-hanging monastery complex in the Wadi Qilt, still inhabited by a few Greek Orthodox monks
  • Judean Wilderness
  • Gibeon - a Canaanite city conquered by the Israelites after they entered the Promised Land
  • Nebi Samwill - the traditional tomb of prophet Samuel 
  • Elah Valley - the famous battlefield of David and Goliath

  • Gamla - a city famous for its strong defense against the Romans in the Jewish Revolt of AD66

  • Beth She'an - the ruins of a Roman city and the site near where the Philistines displayed the bodies of King Saul and his sons
  • Gideon Springs - the place where Gideon chose his 300 men for battle
  • Mount Gilboa - the place where Saul died fighting the Philistines
  • Jezreel - an ancient Israelite city and fortress
  • Nazareth - the boyhood hometown of Jesus

Jesus and the Lake of Galilee


SITES YOU WILL VISIT
  • Mount Arbel - a vista of the Galilee and sites of Jesus' public ministry
  • Tiberias - an Israeli city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee
  • Capernaum - the town and synagogue where Jesus preached during his Galilean ministry
  • Chorazin - the community Jesus rebuked for their lack of faith
  • Mount of Beatitudes - the traditional place where Christ delivered His message on the Beatitudes
  • Sea of Galilee - a freshwater lake in northern Israel where Jesus spent three years ministering and performing miracles
YOUR DAY ALSO INCLUDES

Crossing the Sea of Galilee in a replica of a boat from Jesus' time, then a unique opportunity to be baptized or re-dedicated in the Jordan River.
