The Pool of Bethesda was associated with healing during the New Testament. John describes it as being surrounded by five covered walkways where the sick and lame would gather in the hopes of being the first into the pool when the water was "stirred up." After Jesus healed the paralytic and instructed him to "pick up your mat and walk," the Jewish leaders were upset that Jesus was working on the Sabbath and calling God his own father.
